In 1983, Di Gilpin decided to take a year out and spend time on the Isle of Skye off the west coast of Scotland. It was to be a year of relaxation and a time to “find herself”. That year turned into – well – the best part of twenty years!
In that time, she opened her first store and became one of the most highly respected hand-knit designers in the UK.
In the autumn of 2000, she moved to her present store in St Andrews, where her reputation has grown and spread.

Hi guys
It’s not often we get the chance to go to a knitting event in Scotland so you won’t want too miss this one!
Ganseyfest will be held Inverness on the 1st and 2nd of October with lots of really interesting talks, workshops and events all about knitting and Ganseys! Some of it is free, some of it isn’t and you will need to book to be sure of a space. You can get all the info from http://www.gansey-mf.co.uk/ganseyfest.html
We’ll be there on our traders stand so do come along and say hello, it will be great to see you.
Mandy
hi everyone, really sorry but have to hold off on knitclub this week as I have to host a dinner in edinburgh for a group gansey project event…hope to see you all next week!
Hi everyone, here is some of the latest news from the studio…we now have a facebook page dedicated to the knitclub…see di gilpin’s knitting group….and we are offering B&B or self – catering on site for anyone interested in visiting for a workshop or just a weekend away. Phone or email for rates and photos of accomodation etc. I have been working on some great designs too for this autumn with a return to an intarsia and fairisle bed spread / blanket and some great cable patterns. We now have our own range of organic DK and sock weight yarn which is being organically dyed for us…it is really special! Look forward to hearing from you all, dixxSpring Newsletter
Back from Stobo just in time for knitclub…phewww. Great evening in the Bothy and happy to welcome a new knitter, Annie from Falkland, into the group. Annie is working on a new pattern, with Noro yarn, and we were working out how to increase the sizes of the pattern without it all going out of shape…lots of measuring and checking tension..will keep you posted on how it progresses. I have just finished a short version of the Gruainne jacket in the Romney yarn with cotton/linen Irish slub yarn knitted in so that it looks like grainy sand…I think it is fab and will post photos this week …in fact lots to photo and put up now.
Our fantastic new yarn has arrived this week too…organic bllue faced Leicester…it is the best yarn I have handled for years! Sock and lace weight and DK so far…sending it off to be hand dyed but even the natural is just wonderful….can’t wait to get knitting with it!
By the way knit clubbers, our dear friend Suzie from Carnoustie has dropped in 3 large boxes of yarn for you all to drop in and share!!! Perfect for all your christmas presents etc….It is an awesome collection so hurry and pop in! I thought we should host a little party for her as a thankyou!
Its been a brilliant week so far. Hester has come down from Skye for work experience in the studio and has been teaching me loads! I know that is not really the right way round but it is the truth…I am determined that we will get on with some knitting too but at present we have been looking at the A/W collection I am putting together and getting a great insight into her view on fashion and trends…lots of technical help too…and at last I hav e found somewone brave enough to try on the fab pair of tights we made after all our sampling for London Fashion week…here with a fab single thread 4ply lace kilt!
